Tom McMinn – N Scale Home Layout

My N scale layout is inspired by the dramatic mountain railroading of Donner Pass and the Sierra Nevada, with an emphasis on elevation changes, bridges, tunnels, mountain scenery, and trains working their way through the landscape. Rather than attempting to reproduce one specific location, the layout captures the character and challenges of mountain railroading while giving me the freedom to create my own scenes.

The layout is currently in the early stages of construction and is being built on a primarily flat base. To create the varied terrain I wanted, I designed and 3D printed many of my own track elevation supports, allowing the railroad to climb and descend naturally through the future scenery. As construction continues, these elevated sections will be blended into mountains, valleys, waterways, bridges, and other scenic features.

3D printing is an important part of the layout. In addition to the track-support system, I design and print many of my own structures, details, and other components specifically for the railroad. This allows me to create items that fit a particular location or purpose rather than being limited to commercially available models.

The layout is very much a work in progress, with some areas beginning to show their finished character while others are still bare benchwork and track. As it develops, the goal is to bring together model railroading, scenery, engineering, and 3D design into a railroad that captures the rugged feel of railroading through the Sierra Nevada. My website, which also is a work in progress is: https://dragonrailroad.com/
